In 1937, in the quiet village of Tambour, District Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh, a woman of extraordinary vision looked at a community steeped in educational poverty and saw not hopelessness — but potential. Mohtarma Sultani Khatoon, wife of Qazi Mohammad Tayyab, left the comfort of city life and planted the seeds of a mission she would water with her tears, her wealth, and every breath of her long life.
She began under the name "Taleem-e-Nisva" — Education for Women — going door to door, gathering mothers and daughters in homes, counselling families who had never considered educating their girls. She sold every piece of her jewellery. She gave everything she owned. She never looked back.
By 1943, that spark had become a flame. A formal Madrasa Niswa was established — and from its humble clay walls emerged scholars, leaders, and educators who went on to illuminate districts across Uttar Pradesh. This is where Al Jamiatul Sultania was born.
Two Women Who Changed Everything
In an era when women's education in rural India was nearly unheard of, two remarkable women dared to build what others could not even imagine.
From a distinguished scholarly family of Qazi Pada, Bijnor — with direct family ties to Darul Uloom Deoband — Sultani Khatoon possessed both the learning and the burning passion to transform her village. She took Islahi Bay'ah with Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi (Rah.) and maintained lifelong spiritual connections with the greatest scholars of her era: Shaikh Zakariyya Sahib (Rah.), Qari Mohammad Tayyab Sahib (Rah.) — Vice Chancellor of Darul Uloom Deoband — and Maulana Abrar ul Haq Sahib (Rah.) of Hardoi.
She sacrificed her entire wealth, her jewellery, her comfort — and dedicated every year of her life to this mission until she passed away in December 2001, aged over 90, having never abandoned her call.
Wife of Maulana Haidar Ali (Rah.) — himself a distinguished scholar and close companion of Maulana Hussain Ahmad Madni (Rah.) of Darul Uloom Deoband — Bismillah Khatoon made the ultimate sacrifice of faith. Having no children of her own, she gave her home entirely as a Waqf — a permanent endowment — for the Madrasa.
She walked shoulder to shoulder with Sultani Khatoon into every home, every courtyard, every gathering — awakening families to the light of education. Her house became the first classroom. Her life became the first lesson. Her selflessness became the foundation stone upon which Al Jamiatul Sultania stands to this day.

87 Years of Unbroken Service
Taleem-e-Nisva — The Spark is Lit
Mohtarma Sultani Khatoon arrives in Tambour, Sitapur. Together with Bismillah Khatoon (Mullani Khala), she begins "Taleem-e-Nisva" — going door to door, awakening families to the light of education in one of the most backward rural areas of Uttar Pradesh.
Madrasa Niswa — The Institution is Born
A formal Madrasa Niswa is established in Tambour. Mohtarma Noorjahan Khatoon — Islamic scholar, Qaria of the Quran, and Sultani Khatoon's eldest daughter — becomes its Head. Bismillah Khatoon dedicates her home entirely as a Waqf for the Madrasa. The first classes begin under a thatched roof, with clay walls, and infinite faith.
A Legacy That Illuminated Districts
Thousands of girls and children from Sitapur, Lakhimpur, Biswan, Moradabad and Shahjahanpur receive education. Distinguished alumni include Maulana Hamid Ali, Mufti Abdul Rauf Sahib (Moradabad), Maulana Muazzam Ali, and Bunyad Ansari (MLA). The mission's light spreads far beyond Tambour's borders.
Mohtarma Sultani Khatoon — Returns to Her Creator
After over 90 years of life dedicated entirely to the education of others, Mohtarma Sultani Khatoon passes away — never having abandoned her mission. Her grandson Qazi Mohammad Amir, whose Islamic name was given by Qari Tayyab Sahib (Vice Chancellor, Darul Uloom Deoband), carries the torch forward and establishes AIT Global Educational Research and APJ Abdul Kalam Educational Society.
Free Digital Programs — Thousands Empowered
Free programs including "Hunar Mand Baji" (Women's Skills), "Jugnoo" (Children's Education), Computer Literacy, Digital Awareness, and Women Empowerment reach thousands. The Hazrat Khadeeja Entrepreneur Program is launched through Maulana Mahmood Madni. Thousands of Madrasa teachers across India receive ICT and Digital Education training via digital platforms.
Al Jamiatul Sultania Digital Darul Uloom — Going Global
The 89-year mission takes its greatest leap. Al Jamiatul Sultania Digital Darul Uloom launches as a global free Islamic education platform — carrying the same flame that Sultani Khatoon lit in a small village in 1937 to Muslims across every continent, in multiple languages, completely free, forever.

Darul Uloom Deoband
Sultani Khatoon's cousin Maulana Marghub ur Rahman served as Vice Chancellor (Mohtamim) of Darul Uloom Deoband. Qari Mohammad Tayyab Sahib (Rah.), also Vice Chancellor, gave his blessed name to Qazi Mohammad Amir and blessed this mission.
Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi (Rah.)
Sultani Khatoon took direct Islahi Bay'ah with the great Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi (Rah.) — and maintained connection through his Khulafa including Maulana Abrar ul Haq Sahib (Rah.) of Hardoi, Thanvi's last Khalifa, until her final days.
Maulana Hussain Ahmad Madni (Rah.)
Co-founder Bismillah Khatoon's husband, Maulana Haidar Ali (Rah.), was a distinguished scholar and close companion of the great Maulana Hussain Ahmad Madni (Rah.) of Darul Uloom Deoband — connecting this mission to the highest chains of Islamic scholarship.

Sultani Khatoon sold her jewellery to teach village girls. Bismillah Khatoon gave her home for a classroom. They never charged a single paisa. They followed the tradition of the greatest Islamic scholars — Al-Imam Malik, Al-Imam Al-Shafi'i, Al-Imam Ahmad — who taught thousands without ever asking for payment.
