“أَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ” “Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.” — Quran 13:28
“وَلَنَبْلُوَنَّكُم بِشَيْءٍ مِّنَ الْخَوْفِ وَالْجُوعِ وَنَقْصٍ مِّنَ الْأَمْوَالِ وَالْأَنفُسِ وَالثَّمَرَاتِ ۗ وَبَشِّرِ الصَّابِرِينَ” “And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.” — Quran 2:155
Breaking the Stigma — The Islamic Perspective:
Mental illness is NOT: ❌ A sign of weak Iman ❌ Allah’s punishment ❌ Something to hide or be ashamed of ❌ Solved only by more prayer ❌ A character flaw
Mental illness IS: ✅ A medical condition like diabetes or heart disease ✅ Experienced by the most righteous people ✅ Treatable with Allah’s help AND medical science ✅ Something the Prophet ﷺ acknowledged and responded to with compassion ✅ An opportunity for enormous spiritual reward through patience
The Prophet ﷺ and Mental Health:
The Prophet ﷺ himself experienced profound mental health challenges:
Grief: He experienced “Aam al-Huzn” — The Year of Grief — when he lost his beloved wife Hazrat Khadeeja (RA) and uncle Abu Talib. He was devastated. This was not weakness — it was humanity.
Anxiety: After the first revelation, he trembled with fear. Hazrat Khadeeja (RA) wrapped him and comforted him. Allah then revealed Surah Ad-Duha specifically as mental health support.
Loneliness: He experienced persecution, exile, and the death of his children. He wept openly — teaching us that emotional expression is Sunnah.
His response to others’ mental health:
- He visited the sick and grieving
- He comforted the weeping
- He gave time and full attention to those in distress
- He never dismissed or minimised pain
